High-Tech Safety Features Found on GMC & Buick Vehicles
Advanced safety features have become standard on new vehicles for several years. There are backup cameras, blind spot monitors, emergency braking, and sensors that alert you when you veer out of your lane. We pride ourselves on selling vehicles that have advanced safety features to keep you and your passengers secure and out of an accident.Â
A report from August 2023 by AAA predicts that advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) like those found on new Buick and GMC vehicles could save 8,000 lives per year over the next 30 years.Â
See the advanced safety features you’ll find on new GMC and new Buick vehicles with our guide from the team at Thompson Sales. You might even see these features on our certified pre-owned vehicles, too!
GMC & Buick Advanced Safety FeaturesÂ
GMC & Buick advanced safety features follow three principles: See something, sense something, and prevent something.Â
Advanced Safety Features Allow You to See Something You Can’t See Normally
Monitoring the places around your car that you can’t see is one vital aspect of being safe as a driver. One of the available advanced safety features on GMC vehicles is a rear camera mirror. Rather than a traditional mirror above the dashboard, looking at the rearview mirror with this feature shows a camera view from the back of your vehicle to give you a better sightline of what’s behind you.
High-definition (HD) surround vision uses multiple cameras to display a digital overhead image of the area immediately around your truck or SUV. This view works at low speeds, and it helps you park, avoid nearby objects, and pull out of a parking spot.
Backing your truck or SUV toward a trailer sometimes offers challenges because you can’t see the hitch as it gets closer to the end of the trailer. You would need a partner outside of the vehicle to guide you as you approach the trailer. Now, advanced safety features on GMC trucks or SUVs obviate the need for a partner to help you. You can see the trailer and hitch for yourself with camera views of the back of your vehicle thanks to hitch guidance. The rear cameras on your GMC can overlay guides on the camera view to help you back up to the hitch properly.
Advanced Safety Features Warn You to Take Action
Collision alerts warn you if you’re getting too close to objects towards the front or rear of the vehicle. These sensors help you park, stop in time when traffic pulls out, or help you gauge the distance between you and another vehicle so you can slow down.
Lane Keep Assist offers sensors to help you stay in your lane. Cameras detect whether you veer too much out of your lane, and then the system warns you to turn back into your lane. This feature doesn’t work if your turn signal is on because the vehicle presumes you are trying to change lanes.
The following distance indicator displays the gap between you and the vehicle in front of you so you can choose to speed up or slow down. The general rule of thumb is 2 seconds of following distance.
Park Assist uses sensors in the front and rear of the car to help you pull into and out of a parking spot. Meanwhile, lane change assist lets you know if you have enough distance between you and the vehicles behind so you can change lanes safely.
Blind spot alerts doe two things. First, they will tell you if a vehicle is in your blind spot so you don’t try to change lanes. If your vehicle detects an imminent collision, it will gently steer it back into your lane.
Advanced Safety Features Can Prevent Accidents Automatically
Sometimes, you can’t react fast enough to hit the brakes. Your vehicle can step in during an emergency braking situation to stop your truck or SUV in time to possibly prevent an accident.
Automatic Emergency Braking works at speeds below 50 mph when the Forward Alert Collision system detects an imminent collision. This ADAS provides hard braking or enhances the driver’s braking to avoid or reduce the severity of a front-end collision.
Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking uses radar and camera technology to automatically provide hard braking or enhance a driver’s braking at highway speeds above 50 mph.Â
Automatic Parking Assist can search for and steer your vehicle into a parallel or perpendicular parking space. The driver hits the brakes or accelerates while the vehicle steers.
Lane Keep Assist warns you but also nudges you in the right direction to keep your vehicle in the same lane.
Adaptive Cruise Control maintains a gap between you and the vehicle in front of you based on the time you select. If you want a standard, 2-second interval, choose that option, and your GMC or Buick’s safety systems will keep your vehicle 2 seconds behind the vehicle in front of you at highway speeds.
Front and Rear Pedestrian Baking works at speeds below 50 mph if your vehicle detects a collision with a pedestrian is imminent. The rear pedestrian braking works if you’re backing out of a parking lot. However, this system has limited abilities at night or with low visibility.
