How Often Do You Really Need to Change Your Motor Oil?

Chances are you have heard from an automotive expert that you need to change your motor oil every three months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. While many people still follow that advice, is it still relevant in today’s day and age? Today, the experts at Thompson Sales will look at the specifics of your vehicle’s oil to find the truth about oil changes.

The 3,000 Mile Guideline

The 3,000-mile oil change guideline has been around for many, many years. Likely since before your parents were driving. Many people swear by it, as their vehicles have remained reliable by following the 3,000-mile guideline. However, for most this may be simply anecdotal evidence. Many studies have been done on the impact of longer periods between oil changes. Most experts agree, 3,000 miles simply isn’t applicable in today’s vehicles. As technology has advanced in both automobiles and synthetic oil, many sources suggest a 5,000 to 10,000-mile oil change to be just fine.

Refer to Your Owner’s Manual

If you don’t want to take our word for it, it may be a good idea to check your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Most manuals will have two separate recommendations based on your driving habits. Generally, these will be referred to as ‘normal’ or ‘severe’ driving conditions. ‘Normal’ refers to a regular daily commute, while ‘severe’ should be followed for commercial vehicles who drive upwards of a hundred miles a day, or for activities like towing or off-road conditions.

Each manufacturer will have different mileage recommendations based on the engine and oil type of your vehicle. For instance, the GMC Sierra recommends an oil change every 7,500 miles. In fact, most standard fuel vehicles will recommend around 7,500 miles. Simply check your owner’s manual and stick to that maintenance schedule.
