More Tips on Reducing Allergens in a Used Vehicle

If you are like most people, you may spend an overabundance of time in your car. Whether your car was once new and has aged, or you have purchased a used vehicle, it may be time to address those pesky allergens. 

What allergens lurk inside your used vehicle?

Allergens are particulates such as dust mites, pollen, mold, and animal dander, to name a few.  Most cannot be seen by the naked eye, so it is not something that you usually think about when keeping your used vehicle clean. 

How do I create a minimal-allergen environment in my used vehicle?

While you can’t create a sterile environment, you can take steps to reduce the nasties that cause the itchy, watery eyes, and sneezes that ensue when you come into contact with them.

1. Maintain a clean vehicle.
2. Use the AC more.
3. Secure your pets.
4. Avoid scented products.

How should I keep my used vehicle clean to avoid allergens?

First, make sure that your car filter is in good condition. A dirty filter will just blow more particles inside. Keep the interior of your used vehicle clean with regular vacuuming and wipe downs.  Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter if possible, as it will be more effective in trapping allergens while minimizing your exposure to them while cleaning. Wipe up liquid spills and food particles to minimize bacteria and mold infestations.

Seat coverings and floor mats are other items to consider. If you have fabric seats, consider investing in something to cover them up. Fabric collects and harbors allergens and is more difficult to get clean. The same goes for your floor mats. If possible, invest in plastic or rubber. Don’t forget about the exterior of your used vehicle. Pollens and other particles settle on the outside of your car, and can easily travel inside when you enter and exit.

Is fresh air or air conditioning better for allergens in my used vehicle?

Fresh air is great, but you are inviting even more allergens into your environment. Use the A/C or the air recirculating system to keep the exterior air out. 

What about my pets and allergens in my used car?

If your animal companions routinely cruise with you, consider securing them in a consistent space each time. Not only is this a good safety practice, it will minimize the amount of dander and hair flying around and nestling deep down into your seats. 

Can I still use commercial scented products?

Those scented products that you see advertised contain volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) and they are not a good thing for your health. If you have your car professionally cleaned, ask them to skip this step.
