Why Won’t My Car Start?

November 12th, 2017 by

You wake up in the morning and get out the door. You’re definitely going to make it to work on time today. You get in your car and…it doesn’t start. This can be really frustrating, but most of the time there’s an easy remedy. Today in the Thompson Sales blog, we’ll go over some common reasons your car won’t start.

Dead Battery

Of course, the most common reason people can’t get their car to start is a dead battery. This happens most commonly when the weather is extremely cold. Typically, this can be fixed with a jumpstart. Your battery is likely dying, though, and Thompson Sales recommends getting it replaced as soon as possible. If the jumpstart doesn’t work, it means your battery is officially dead. You’ll have to replace it.

Out of Gas

Do you often test the limits of your fuel tank? If so, you might not have enough gas to start your car up. If this is the case, you’ll just have to get some gas in the tank. Remember, it’s not recommended to run your car close to empty often because it can put unnecessary wear on your vehicle. Thompson Sales recommends filling up before the gas light turns on, if you can.

You Have a Bad Starter or Ignition Switch

If your headlights and other lights in your car are working but your car won’t start, you can rule out the battery. In these cases, you might be dealing with a broken starter or a bad ignition switch. If this is the culprit, you’ll need to bring it into the shop to get them replaced. This is unfortunate, but luckily it’s not a terribly expensive fix.

Your Fuel Filter is Clogged

Sometimes, if you forget to have your fuel filter replaced, it can get clogged and prevent gas from getting to the engine. This is another thing that you’ll have to get fixed at the shop. Remember to change your fuel filter when your mechanic suggests, so you don’t run into this problem again.
