Some Myths About Buying Used Vehicles That You Should Ignore

Hesitant about shopping for used vehicles? A lot of people are, but there’s no reason to be. Unfortunately, there are a few myths about risks and pitfalls that come with buying pre-owned cars that have been blown out of proportion over time. As professional sellers of both new and used vehicles, Thompson Sales is here to help. We’re more than happy to dispel some unhelpful myths about used cars, how they’re sold, and what to expect from them.
Myth 1: Every Used Car Seller is a Con Artist
We’ll get the most obvious one of out the way first. Even today, too many people still assume that anyone selling used vehicles is looking to scam them in some way. Regardless of whether they’re selling through a dealership or independently, the image of a shady used car dealer is all too common.
While there’s certainly always a chance, especially with an independent seller you find online, that you’re at risk of a con, the truth is most dealerships want to avoid ripping anyone off. Being known for lying to your customers is generally not great for your reputation. The more established a dealership is, the more trustworthy they need to be in order to maintain a loyal customer base.
Thompson Sales has a reputation to uphold with our manufacturer relationships, and having quality used vehicles for sale on our lot is one way we do that.
Myth 2: You’ll Get a Better Deal with a Private Seller
In fact, you’re generally better off shopping for used vehicles through a dealership. Another common myth is that you can get a better deal through a private seller. The problem is that no one is stopping a private seller from not telling you things about the vehicle you’re buying. Salespeople at dealerships are expected to meet certain standards, especially when we have certified pre-owned vehicles. Again, we have a reputation to maintain with manufacturers and the people in our community.
Myth 3: You Can’t Rely on a Used Car
Another persistent myth when it comes to used vehicles is that they’re unreliable. A lot of people still see buying a used or pre-owned car as a desperation move rather than just a sensible, affordable choice. In reality, used cars are often in perfectly good, sometimes even as-new condition. It all depends on how well taken care of the car was by the previous owner. Once again, a certified pre-owned car has an even greater chance of being in reliable condition for a long time because they are in like-new condition on our lot.
Myth 4: A Used Car Has No Resale Value
The value of a used car depends on the condition of the car when you buy and how well you take care of it before reselling it. If you’re buying a certified pre-owned vehicle, it’s going to meet a higher standard than a regular used car. If you take care of it while you own it, then it’s still going to have a reliable resale value if you decide to sell it.
