Thompson Sales Explains How to Tint Your Windows

November 9th, 2018 by

One of the most common upgrades you can make to your vehicle is tinting the windows. Although it’s not the easiest thing to do, you can even tint them yourself. If you plan on tinting your own windows, make sure you’re careful. Today in the Thompson Sales blog, we’ll talk about what you need to do to apply tint to your windows.

Get the Right Tint

First, you’ll need to choose your tint. Remember, your tint can’t be over a certain percentage, depending on the laws in your state. Make sure to look up your local tint laws before choosing a percent. Also, make sure to look up some brand reviews. You don’t want to end up with a product that doesn’t work well.

Clean Your Windows

The first thing you need to do is thoroughly clean your windows to prevent dust and other contaminants from getting stuck under the tint. You should do your tint application in a garage or inside area that will prevent more dust from getting on your windows during the application. It’s also easier to do on a temperate, less humid day.

Use soap and water or ammonia-free glass cleaner to get your windows as clean as possible. Do this at least a couple of times to make sure they’re completely clean. Once you’re finished cleaning them, dry the windows off with a clean rag and a squeegee.

Measure and Cut

Next, you need to measure the windows and cut the tint to the proper size. Have a few inches extra on each side so you be more precise once you put it on the window.

Installation

Spray your application solution on the window and attach the sticky side of your tint to the window. Don’t put the entire cut of film on the window yet, work from the bottom. As you go, use a razor to cut off any of the excess film at the edges.

Once you have the tint on the entire window, use the smoothing tool that should have come with your tint kit. Use this to smooth out any bubbles and creases. Spraying hot water on your tint can make it easier to smooth out.

Remember, if you’re installing your own tint, it’s important to follow whatever directions come with the kit. It’s also a good idea to watch some how-to videos so you can see exactly what to do.
