For most vehicles, you will check it with the engine running and the transmission in park, however, some exceptions do apply. If you are unsure, you can verify this with your owner’s manual. Simply take the dipstick out and wipe it clean with a towel. Put the dipstick back into the chamber and pull it out once more. Your dipstick will have a marking to show the level at which your transmission fluid needs to be. If the fluid levels are low, add enough to reach the level shown on the dipstick. However, be careful as adding too much transmission fluid can also cause potential problems.

Other than maintaining your transmission fluid, there are a few general things you should do to protect your transmission. You can potentially damage your transmission by overheating.
