When you’re choosing a car for performance, there are a multitude of factors you’ll want to consider. Two of the factors you’ll want to consider are torque and horsepower. You may have heard these terms used in commercials, but do you know the difference between the two and what they actually mean? Today, Thompson Sales explains.

What Is Horsepower?

When comparing car engines, horsepower is probably the figure you might be most familiar with. Even if you’re not a car nut, if someone tells you the engine is 700 horsepower, you know it’s pretty powerful. But how powerful is that exactly?

Well, horsepower, by definition, is the measure of the amount of work done over a period of time. One horsepower is equal to the amount of work that is needed to lift 33,000 pounds one foot in one minute. A dynamometer is used to measure engine torque at different RPMs, then a calculation is done using these numbers to find out horsepower.

What Is Torque?

Torque is the engine’s capacity to do work. So, as you might have picked up, horsepower doesn’t exist without torque and vice-versa. These two measures are pretty closely tied together. Basically, if an engine has high torque, it has a lot of potential to perform work.

Which One Do I Want?

If you’re looking for a powerful car, it depends on where you’re looking for power. Are you looking for speed and sporty performance or are you looking for towing utility? The answer to that question determines how much horsepower and torque you want. High horsepower engines are usually associated with sports cars. So if you’re looking for driving performance, you’ll want something with a good amount of horsepower. On the other hand, if you’re looking for something that can tow heavy trailers, you’ll what something that produces a lot of torque, like a truck.
