What Kind of Technology Will Be in Our Vehicles in the Near Future?
The progression of vehicle technology is something that isn’t going to slow down anytime soon. With all these exciting changes coming our way, it can be hard to keep track of everything. Today in the Thompson Sales blog, we’ll be looking at some auto technology trends and what you can expect to see in the near future.
Widespread Adoption of Current Technologies
Even though technology for automobiles progresses quickly, adoption of technologies can take a little longer. For instance, although autonomous vehicles are technically possible right now, they won’t be taking over the roads in the immediate future. However, current new technologies like cars with Wi-Fi connectivity and integration with smartphones will be standard in most new vehicles manufactured.
Augmented reality has been making waves in a variety of industries. Just look at the meteoric success of mobile game Pokemon Go. This app makes it look like the creatures you catch in the game are standing right in front of you (through the lens of the phone of course). Augmented reality has applications that go much further than games though.
Imagine driving through an unfamiliar city. You input the directions to your destination in your car’s navigation system. You’re driving down the street and you need to make a right turn soon. Instead of having to listen to a voice command or looking down at your screen, an arrow pops up on your windshield, directing you where to go. This is just one example of how augmented reality can make driving much more convenient, and even safer.
Finally, we come to the one everyone is looking forward to. Of course, there’s something to be said for taking the wheel yourself and driving down a nice back road, but it’s also nice to let someone else take the wheel every once in a while.
With the rise of autonomous vehicles, you can turn that road trip into your next Netflix binge-watching session, or you can catch up on work. All while the car safely gets you to your destination without any input from you.
Out of the advancements on this list, this one is probably furthest away right now. The infrastructure for the vehicles to communicate with traffic lights and other obstacles isn’t there yet, but it’s definitely on the way.
