Getting a Ticket

You’re running late to work and your foot gets a little heavy on the gas pedal. Next thing you know you see those dreaded blue and red lights flashing behind you. Whoops. It happens to the best of us, but that doesn’t make a speeding ticket any less frustrating. So what should you do when you get a speeding ticket? Today in the Thompson Sales blog we’ll explain what you need to do to take care of it.

Don’t Make It Worse

First things first, when you get pulled over, make sure you don’t make your situation any worse. Be calm, courteous, and honest with the officer who pulled you over. With any luck, you might get off with a warning! Even if you don’t, being rude could make your situation worse. An agitated officer may try to find other tickets to give you that they may not have given you otherwise.

Weigh Your Options

When you get a speeding ticket, you can either choose to fight the ticket or just pay it. Obviously, the easiest course of action is to just pay it. However, this will add points to your driving record and most likely increase your insurance rate. Even if you were in the wrong, fighting the ticket or seeking to mitigate the charge could make your situation better.

Fight the Ticket

If you think your ticket was wrongfully issued, by all means, fight it in court. However, if you weren’t actually speeding, you’ll have to find a way to prove it to the judge. In certain cases, speeding can be justified, like a medical emergency. You’ll also have to provide proof in these situations too. Producing a receipt from your medical visit could help your case, for example.

Of course, if the ticket was justified, you’re better off not fighting it. You should instead seek to reduce the penalties of the ticket. In this case, your best bet is hiring a traffic ticket lawyer. They can do several things that you might not be able to do yourself.

For one, they can appear in court for you, saving you the time and the trip. The other thing they can do is possibly reduce the fine and the number of points that go on your record. They can also make sure your insurance company doesn’t need to see the ticket. The savings from your insurance premium alone is usually worth the cost of hiring a traffic lawyer.
