E85 is a special type of gasoline that isn’t completely based on petroleum. The overall idea is to offer Americans a more eco-friendly option for people who own vehicles with internal combustion engines. Today’s blog from Thompson Sales explains everything you need to know about E85 gasoline.

What’s in E85 Gasoline?

E85 gasoline contains anywhere from 51 to 83 percent ethanol combined with petroleum-based gasoline. The United States produced 15.8 billion gallons of ethanol fuel in 2019, and the US is the largest producer of fuel ethanol in the world. Part of the reason is a mandate from the federal government, and another is because there are so many vehicles on American roads.

Can E85 Work in Any Vehicle?

You should only put E85 gasoline in a flex fuel vehicle (FFV). There are approximately 21 million flex fuel vehicles on the road. FFVs can use regular gasoline or E85 gasoline. Regular engines burn only regular gasoline or diesel fuel. Non-flex fuel vehicles cannot use E85 gasoline because it won’t burn correctly in the combustion chamber. However, ordinary gasoline contains up to 10 percent ethanol by law.

Price of E85 Gas

The price of E85 gasoline varies. In the Midwest, where corn producers are plentiful, the price of E85 is low. In places where corn-based ethanol isn’t prominent, prices are higher due to higher transportation costs. Many states feature lower prices of E85 versus petroleum-based gasoline. In Southwest Missouri, prices of E85 may be 10 to 15 percent lower than ordinary gasoline.

What E85 Does for Your Car

E85 has fewer emissions than gasoline, meaning there is less build-up in your combustion chamber and emissions system. Believe it or not, E85 has a higher octane rating than gasoline, and it can provide more horsepower. E85 resists compression and detonation, which makes your engine more efficient. You could actually save on car maintenance over time while reducing carbon emissions.
