Family of four looking out the sunroof of a vehicle

A sunroof is a great accessory on a new or used vehicle! It allows you to get a good breeze going through the cabin without having a full convertible. In today’s blog from Thompson Sales, we take a look at frequently asked questions about sunroofs on new and used vehicles.

What is a sunroof?

A sunroof is a panel embedded in the roof of a car, SUV, or truck that allows light, air, or both to come into the cabin.

How does a sunroof work?

This feature works by either tilting up above the roof or sliding into the roof of the vehicle. This occurs manually or with a small motor at the push of a button. Modern cars have a button on the dashboard that activates the mechanism.

How many cars have sunroofs?

The New York Times reported that 40% of cars or light trucks sold in 2017 had sunroofs, compared to just 33% in 2011. So this feature is very popular!

What is the difference between a moonroof and a sunroof?

A moonroof usually has a tinted glass panel, while a traditional sunroof can be removed completely if needed. Modern vehicles usually combine these two features into one, and they cannot be completely removed from the roof.

Do sunroofs leak?

Well-built and well-designed ones do not leak.

What causes sunroofs to leak?

A clog in the drainage system is the most common reason for leaks. The drainage system carries water away from the seams, while clogs normally happen along the top of the drain where you can see it.

Debris along the seals also causes a sunroof to leak, and the dirt and debris may prevent it from closing entirely.

Cracked seals are another issue altogether. You might need to have a professional technician replace the seals or install a new sunroof if broken seals are letting rain into the cabin.

How do you stop a sunroof from leaking?

Dislodge any debris with a cotton swab or compressed air. Then test the drainage system by pouring some bottled water into the drain to see if it ends up at the bottom of the car where it belongs.

Wipe away any dirt and debris from seals.

Can leaky sunroofs be fixed?

If wiping away debris doesn’t fix the problem, you need to take the vehicle to a dealership for repairs. If the issue is a factory flaw, it can only be repaired by replacing it entirely.
