Dirt & Gravel Road in Missouri

Many SUVs and pickup trucks come off-road ready at Thompson Sales. Consider the AT4 trims of the GMC Acadia, Yukon, and Terrain if you want to explore exciting new places in your family-friendly SUV. Then, there are the ATX trims of the Canyon, Sierra 1500, and Sierra 2500 HD pickup trucks for off-roading that have extra towing capabilities.

If you’re ready to plan your next outdoor adventure, we’ve got some off-roading destinations for you within 200 miles of Springfield. Not all of these places are off-road per se, but they have gravel or dirt road trails that aren’t easily accessible without off-road capabilities.

Mark Twain National Forest

The Mark Twain National Forest has numerous dirt roads and hard-to-get-to places unless you have an off-road-ready vehicle.  When looking for that perfect rustic camping spot or trailhead, having a vehicle with off-road capabilities is a must.

Mary Cole Ridge

West of Branson near Eagle Rock on State Highway 86, you’ll find the Mary Cole Ridge trail, which takes you 3 miles into a hardwood forest that sings in the fall time if you want to see the splendor of autumn leaves. There are many campsite pull-offs and spur trails for motorcycles and ATVs. There’s a trailhead on Highway 86 if you want to park and then hike or motor along.

Devreaux Ridge Road

South of Chadwick is Devreaux Ridge Road, a gravel and mostly dirt road perfect for off-roading, camping, and outdoor fun. You’ll need to traverse one creek bed about halfway through this 7.5-mile trail. Head south of Chadwick on Highway H. On the left side, you’ll see Garrison Road. Head east on Garrison Road until you see Devreux Road or FS Road 563. If you follow the entirety of this off-road trail, you’ll end up in Garrison.

Old River Road – Buffalo National River

Northwest Arkansas has plenty of scenic beauty. The Old River Road Trail covers 16.6 miles with loose gravel and dirt roads. You’ll have great fishing and camping opportunities. Head to Compton, Arkansas. Turn south onto Road 19, where the road goes south. Eventually, the trail turns to the east and heads to Pruitt. You’ll see creek beds and plenty of campgrounds in this beautiful area. Watch out for other enthusiasts!

Ozark National Forest – Carwash Falls

For a truly unique experience, head to Carwash Falls along Big Piney Creek in Northwest Arkansas west of Pelsor and near Jasper. If you go after it rains, you’ll need a vehicle with water-fording capabilities. When it’s dry, this off-road trail is relatively easy to traverse. Some of the waterfalls are breathtaking, but you’ll have to hike to the most out-of-the-way locations. But it’s still worth the drive!
