1. Get New Tires

In many cases, you might not need new tires. If you don’t need new tires, you should still make sure that you’re keeping a close eye on your tire pressure and your tread. If you own an older used vehicle, your tires are the one thing that you can control. Your car might be old, but you can still put brand-new tires on it. Your vehicle might have issues, but with good tires for winter, you can at least help prevent any accidents.

2. Keep Up With Your Fluids

With newer cars, you might be able to get away with inconsistency in your fluid levels. However, with an older vehicle, you won’t have that same luxury. Especially with a used vehicle whose previous owner might not have been as consistent with fluids as they should have been. 

Antifreeze is very important during the winter, obviously, but with a used vehicle, it’s even more crucial. Engines will work harder in the cold regardless but with a used car the engine won’t be able to shrug off the cold like a newer one. Keeping your antifreeze and coolant level maintained makes a huge difference. Keeping your gas tank as full as possible can help prevent running out of gas if you’re in a traffic jam.

3. Get Your Oil Changed With Winter-Grade Oil

Another precaution you can take for your used vehicle as winter approaches is to find the right oil for your engine. When you get your oil changed for the winter, or even if you just need to add oil, use oil that’s winter-grade.
