Microchip with a microchip in the middle concept

If you’ve been shopping for a new car at various dealerships around Springfield, MO lately, you’ve probably noticed one common theme: There are very few new vehicles for sale. But why is this happening?

At Thompson Sales, we understand that it’s frustrating to not be able to browse a full inventory of new vehicles, especially when you’re ready to make a purchase. However, there is an explanation for this. We’re here to discuss the lack of new cars and when you can expect to see more on our lot.

Where are all the new vehicles?

Used car prices have suddenly increased due to the low volume of new vehicles available for sale. And the cause? A worldwide shortage of semiconductor computer chips.

Believe it or not, a new car contains thousands of semiconductor computer chips. These chips are responsible for important tasks like letting us know when we’re low on fuel, when our tire pressure is down, and running our entertainment systems, among many other things.

However, many other industries and companies also use these chips to build their products, including those that manufacture smartphones, video game consoles, laptops, and other consumer electronics. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for these products drastically increased, forcing auto manufacturers’ needs for the chips onto the backburner.

As a result, the production of new cars has been severely delayed. And as eager buyers snag what’s already available on lots, the lag in production leaves car dealerships in Springfield and around the world like Thompson Sales with a very low inventory of new vehicles.

When can we expect to see more new cars for sale?

Fortunately, there is a light at the end of this tunnel. General Motors has communicated to us that things should begin to get better soon.

However, the staff at Thompson Sales is using every resource possible to meet our customers’ needs. We are getting more and more inventory every day, and hope to see inventory levels return to normal very soon. hope to be able to meet the high demand for new vehicles at Thompson Sales as soon as possible. Until then, we will do everything we can to meet your needs and wants as you shop for a new or used car.
